In the world of Bob Timberlake, history, family, tradition, and nature are the roots from which all good comes, and art is the flower into which they blossom. When our team visited Timberlake on his farm in Lexington, North Carolina, the evidence of his values was all around.

The farm is home to Timberlake's studio, housed in a refurbished barn that is original to the property. Timberlake moved another historic barn to the land and turned it into a guest house - the story goes that the building was saved from certain destruction at the hands of Union soldiers by an intrepid farm wife with her children at her skirts.
The structures on Timberlake's farm are filled to the brim with the artifacts of his life. Hunting and fishing paraphernalia figure prominently, sandwiched in between the simple objects - like berry-picking baskets, historic drums and vintage children's toys - that inspire Timberlake's art, as well as well-worn paint palettes and wood-working tools. Their combined effect belies Timberlake's life lived in fresh air and creative stimulation.
A table's worth of inspiration in Bob Timberlake's studio
As Timberlake will tell you himself, he could have lived any kind of life. He's had the opportunity to go from eating barbecue with the locals in Lexington one day to lunching in London with the Prince of Wales the next. But he chose to stay where his and his wife's families have been for centuries, and to teach his children, grandchildren, and now even his great grandchildren to appreciate the land and its stories.
